A Successful Start to the Race Team's 2017 Campaign

The 2017 Race Season is finally upon us and so far your Victoria Wheelers Race Team is demonstrating the value of their winter training.  With strong results on the mainland and the local Victoria Cycling League scene, 2017 is shaping up to be a successful one!

Several riders made their way over to Vancouver for a few of Escape Velocity's Spring Series events.  In the Elite field we saw Andrew Russell and Maxim Ellison take on some brutal conditions.  On both days ARuss made the decisive break and finished 5th in a strong field of riders.  In the Cat4 events we saw young guns Duncan Bryson and Nick Monette hit the podium on two occasions with Nick getting the top step and Duncan finishing 2nd and 4th, both grabbing valuable upgrade points in their claim to move up the ranks.

Locally the VCL season began with Caleb Pike.  The team fielded a strong group of Masters men to take on the B event including Rich Martin, Stephane Tran, Brian Green, Mick Bryson, Garth Campbell, Calum Findlay, Barry Beck, Dave Trill, and Chris Wille.  The group ended up finishing 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 5th, 6th and 7th with Barry Beck getting the win.  In the A field the team field just three riders, an unlikely reoccurrence with several of our faster men absent from this event.  ARuss, Maxim and Eugene Hahn took to the start and immediately ARuss attacked and found himself in a move with just one other rider.  The pack relentlessly chased them down which in the process whittled the field down to a small break attempt that caught the daring duo on bell lap.  ARuss made a cunning move to escape the groupo compacto to come across the line solo for the victory with Eugene outsprinting the group for 2nd.

All in all it's been an action filled start to 2017.  Stay tuned for more news in the coming months as your Race Team participates in more events in the Pacific Northwest.

Well done racers!
